About Our Research Interests

We are interested in several classes of rare-earth materials, including chalcogenides and intermetallics. We also have emerging interests in oxyhalide systems where we can study the effects of local crystal structure on the semiconducting nature of the systems.

Rare-earth chalcogenides and the mixed anion systems, rare-earth oxychalcogenides, are interesting because of their optical properties. For example, binary rare-earth chalcogenides are used as a pigment for red plastics and other rare-earth chalcogenides are even used as infrared windows. Our group is working towards:

  • finding new rare-earth chalcogenides and rare-earth oxychalcogenides and exploring their properties

  • fine-tuning physical properties by controlling variables such as chemical composition and temperature.
